John Muir

My IT guys placed a new (used) pc on my network. Installed Office365 with Access. When trying to open the db, i get this error:
Could not read definitions; no read definitions permission for table or query~sq c2015FORM NEW CASES ALL CASES~Child560

any ideas?

Thanks,

John

Hold the Shift key while opening the DB.  That prevents any startup execution.  If the DB opens, try opening up some tables and see if there is any more error.  Then open up the form mentioned in the error you got: "2015FORM NEW CASES ALL CASES".  I suspect the DB opens this form on startup, causing the error.  If you can't open the form, but can open everything else, you may have your answer right there -- that form is damaged.  The stranger characters in the error, "~sq c" and "~Child560", are found in a hidden system table called "MSysObjects" inside the DB.  If that got damaged, it would be tough to fix.

If this DB is one you were familiar with before the move to the new PC, you may try turning off auto-starting the form in question.  If this is someone else's DB, ask the DB's owner about the error to see if he is an inkling.

Before I did a whole lot of messing with it I would attempt to recopy the db from the old computer. It may be the copy got corrupted during the install.

Do the old computer and new computer match in regard to the bitness of the install?  32 bit vs 64 bit?

Does your new PC give you read permissions to the database?

Thanks.

DB won't open holding shift.

I should have explained my db is split, be on the server and fe on each desk top.

This db fe opens fine on all other computers on the same network.

Don't know if give you read permissions were given to the database? How do i check and do that?

Thanks,

John

If you download and try and open the TechHelp Free Templates are you able to open that?

It might be that your folder isn't trusted.  See the Blocked! video.

Hi John, so is it the back end or the front end file that you have this problem with?  The error specifically mentions a form's name, so I assume it's the FE.  In most cases, FE is used by many users, so many users have a copy of the FE.  So can you just use another FE file from another user?

FE needs BE to open properly, so the problem could still be due to the BE file.

When you say "DB won't open holding shift", does it still give you the same error?  No error?

To Scott,

Tried to download free template. got a message:
     Microsoft Access Security Notice

Microsoft has blocked macros from running because the source of this file is untrusted

To Kevin,

BE opens fine.

Still get the same message.

Thanks,

John

Watched "Trusted Location" and created trusted folder.
Still get the same message; "Could not read definitions....
Also got: "last time you opened...serious error. Actually got this message before, but opening the same db on all other desktops works fine...
I think my IT guy who connected the new pc to my network did or didn't do something when he set it up. He can't figure it out...
Anything else to try?

Thanks,

John

Still needing some help if possible.

I built a new test db on the new pc. I connected to the BE on my server and it works fine. When i tried to import querries, forms and reports, i get the same error:

Could not read definitions; no read definitions permission for table or query~sq c2015FORM NEW CASES ALL
     CASES~Child560

Is there a way i can import just one form, one query and so on?

Any ideas on how to isolate the problem?

Thanks,

John

Hi John, it looks like the problem occurs only on your PC and none others on your network.  I'm leaning towards a permission issue.  If your IT person can't solve it, at least tell us what he has done and what he thinks, which is still more useful info than our guesswork here since we have no access to your PC.  So here is my guesswork that you can try: go to a PC that you know is working, plug in a USB storage (memory stick, portable drive).  Create a folder on the USB storage.  Create an Access DB in that folder, open it, and use it to see it's functional.  Unplug USB drive.  Plug it to your problematic PC.  Use that DB again to see if it's functional.  If it is, copy that folder to your problematic PC's drive and test that DB again.
