Custom Purchase Order Form
steve m

Richard,
Thank you for the reply, I am still learning the best practices with access, and I am confused on part of your response because my tables and form were set up the way you had it. The reason I went with a form rather than report was because the form might need edits prior to printing.

I have two tables that store different things. For example my PurchaseOrderLogT stores information similar to your OrderT. My LineItemDetailT stores information similar to your OrderDetailsT. I am using a query to pull information from both to fill my second form, or report at this point.
Prior to watching your 300 series videos, I was able fill out everything on my main form, the information stored in the appropriate tables, and the relationships work perfect. My issue goes back to your Recordset or Docmd.GotoRecord comment. Im not 100% sure how to move forward on a report to line item 2-10. Do I still bound the text boxes and use code?
I have a sample code that I have been working with but no luck.
Dim db As DAO.Database
Dim rst As DAO.Recordset
Dim i As Integer
Set db = CurrentDb
Set rst = db.OpenRecordset("LineItemDetailsT")
i = 1
If rst.RecordCount > 0 Then
   Do Until rst.EOF
     Me.Controls(i & "txtItem1") = rst("ItemDescrip")
     Me.Controls(i & "txtItem2") = rst("StockNum")
     ' ...etcetera...
   rst.MoveNext
   Loop
End If
rst.Close
Set rst = Nothing

Reply from Richard Rost:

Don't mix the use of recordsets with control editing. Use one or the other. If you're already starting with recordsets, just use those. They're almost always better. You'll use one recordset to copy over the purchase order info, and then a second one for the details. I do something VERY similar to this in Access 328 when I create my purchase orders.

However, I still stand by my initial point that you shouldn't use a FORM for something that needs to be printed. Sure, if you need to make additional edits, that's fine - give the user another screen. But do the printing with a report. And, ask yourself if a second set (COPY) of the data is REALLY necessary. Could you just edit the original record and save yourself the time?
