Working with Gmail not Outlook

I'm getting this when I use my Office365 credentials: "ERROR: The transport failed to connect to the server".

Has anyone had success using smtp.office365.com as their server?

I tested my credentials using https://www.gmass.co/smtp-test and received the test email so I know that's not the issue.

I appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

What Port number are you using? It should be 587.

Yes, that is what I'm using. The credentials have been tested. There's something else going on but I don't know what it is.

Did you enter your email credentials into a random site?

No, it's a company I am familiar with and used in the past.

Do I need to change anything in the code for TLS vs SSL?

Any help finding a solution would be appreciated.

Thanks for all you do!

Hi Tom, CDO is ancient tech, and that's likely the cause of this headache with the port.  Based on my Googling, that seems to be the case.  Richard's videos on CDO are a last resort for people who don't have any email clients.  You have Office 365, so you must have Outlook.  So you can just use Outlook automation instead, which is much better.  CDO is decades old, and it lets you put your password inside the VBA code, which is a big security risk in this day and age.  If your use Outlook automation, the password is never in the code, but in the Outlook app itself.

I've been planning to buy the Email Seminar for a while but if the methods used won't work with Outlook it won't work for me. I was hopping that these Tech Help videos would help me get the basics and then I'd get the seminar to finish it off. It works great with Gmail but not being able to sent HTML through Gmail limits the functionality a lot.

It's my understand that the seminar covers the method of connecting with the old Outlook, not the new one.

That I am not sure of, perhaps Richard can clarify

NEW Outlook is garbage. It does not allow any kind of programmability. Switch to Classic Outlook and it will work just fine. OR skip Outlook altogether and use CDO to send direct to your mail server, like Gmail. This is covered in the Email Seminar.

I've used CDO as you show in this Tech Help and it works great with Gmail. When I use my smtp.office365.com account. I get the "ERROR: The transport failed to connect to the server". Are you saying that CDO won't work with this account?

Hi Tom, you don't need the new Outlook.  The old Outlook is what you need to send email, via automation.  As I said, you *don't* need CDO.  That is for people with no email clients, and/or for environments that don't use email clients, such as web interfaces.  You already have the original Outlook.  You *already* have the solution and therefore don't need to use CDO.

CDO should work with it, but your mail server settings might be different. Like Kevin says, however, if you have Classic Outlook, you don't need it... unless you're trying to connect to both mail servers with the same database and want a single method for doing so. I do from time to time. I have email batches that I send out using Gmail or my domain mail (via Twilio SMTP) or several other methods. You just have to find the right settings for your mail server.
