It's time for another video quiz from Access Learning Zone. This one's for expert-level users.

I got five questions covering Access subforms. You'll get three seconds to answer each one, so hit that pause button if you need more time. Keep track of your scores so we can see how you did at the end.

Are you ready to keep mission control happy? Here we go.

Question one: What is the main purpose of a subform in Microsoft Access? To display related records inside another form, to store a backup copy of the main form's records, to print the current record as a report, or to replace a table relationship.

That is A: to display related records inside another form.

Question two: A user enters a new related record directly in an editable subform. What normally happens? The entry exists only until the main form is closed. Access creates a new table for the entry. The related record is saved to the subform's underlying record source, or the entry is copied into the parent record.

That is C: the related record is saved to the subform's underlying record source.

Question three: Which setup correctly links a Customer F main form to a Contact F subform, so each customer shows only that customer's contacts?

There are your options. Take a look over them. I'll give you three seconds.

That's option A: Link Master Fields: Customer ID; Link Child Fields: Customer ID. That's usually, but not always, the same field name.

Question four: You want to change the Link Master Fields and Link Child Fields settings. Which object should you select in Design View? A text box inside the subform, the subform control's border on the main form, the main form's record selector, or the subform's detail section only.

That will be the subform control's border on the main form.

And question five: A subform uses a custom query that displays contact date and notes, but the query does not include Customer ID. You want to link it to the Customer F by the Customer ID. What should you do? Add Customer ID to the subform's query's record source, even if it's hidden on the form; change Customer ID in Customer T to a short text field; add Customer ID only to the main form's record source; or turn on Cascade Delete Related Records.

That will be A: add Customer ID to the subform's query's record source, even if it's hidden on the form.

All right, how'd you do? Did you find New Olympus and make Mars Earth's favorite neighbor? Or did you unpack your suitcase outside the airlock?

Well, if you missed any of these questions, these and many more are covered in my Microsoft Access Expert Level Three class. Lesson three is all about subforms.

Thanks for playing. Be sure to post your score in the comments down below and let us know whether your database is ready for Mars or is still venting records into space.

And until next time, live long and prosper.
