In this video, I'll show you how to use the Windows Snip & Sketch Tool to capture pretty much anything you want on your screen. You can then save it to a file, edit it, or copy it to another application. This is available in Windows 10 and 11.

Update

Windows 11 now calls the Snip & Sketch Tool the Snipping Tool. It's pretty much the same thing. I still use HyperSnap.

Intro In this video, I will show you how to use the Snip & Sketch tool in Microsoft Windows to quickly take screenshots, edit them using built-in drawing tools, and either paste them into emails and documents or save and upload them to a website. You'll learn handy keyboard shortcuts, basic editing features, and how to save and share your screenshots easily.
Transcript Welcome to another Fast Tips video brought to you by Windows Learning Zone. I am your instructor, Richard Rost.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to use the Windows SNIP and Sketch tool to take screenshots.

Let's say I want to send a screenshot of just this main menu form here to someone else.

I'm going to open up the SNIP and Sketch tool by pressing Win Shift S on my keyboard. That's the Windows key, which most keyboards have nowadays, and then Shift and S. It looks like that key combination right there: hold down Windows, hold down Shift, press S.

Your screen will darken a little bit, and your mouse pointer will change into a little plus. Now, click and drag and draw a square around what you want to capture. Let it go.

You'll then see a little notification pop up in the bottom right corner saying the SNIP is saved to the clipboard. Click on that, and now the SNIP and Sketch application will open up.

At this point, if you have a favorite editor like Windows Paint or Photoshop, you can paste this image into that if you want to, or you can make some simple changes right here. There are a bunch of different tools up here. There's a marker, ballpoint pen. You can change the color. You can draw doodles on here. There's a highlighter. All kinds of different stuff. Whatever you want to do.

When you're happy with this image, you can do two things. You can either copy it again and paste it into something else, like your email program or a document like Word, or you can save the file if you want to upload it somewhere.

To copy it, click on the little copy button right there and now it's copied back to your clipboard. If you want to go to your email program like Gmail, click on your email and paste it right in with Control-V, and there it is.

Or if you want to upload it somewhere, like to one of my forums on my website, you can save it. It's going to ask where you want to save this stuff. I'll put it right on my desktop. That's where I save most of my stuff that I'm working on temporarily. Change the file name if you want to. Hit save.

Now you'll see a little file right there on my desktop has appeared. Now you can upload it to my website, for example, using the upload images link. I'll choose a file, click the screenshot I just saved, hit open, click upload. And there it goes. Now it's on my website. If I return to the post, you can see there it is.

So that's the basics of using the SNIP and Sketch tool. There are some different options and some other tools you can use in the SNIP and Sketch tool, and I will cover those in my Windows beginner course.

Thanks for watching, and for more tips like this, be sure to subscribe to my channel and visit my website at windowslearningzone.com. Thank you.

Summary Today's video from Windows Learning Zone focuses on using the Windows SNIP and Sketch tool to take screenshots. I want to walk you through the process of capturing a specific part of your screen, such as a section of a form, so you can easily share it with others.

To start, open the SNIP and Sketch tool by holding down the Windows key and the Shift key, then pressing S. Most modern keyboards have the Windows key. When you press this combination, your screen will darken slightly and your mouse pointer will change to a plus sign. Now you can click and drag to draw a rectangle around the area you want to capture. Once you release the mouse button, that portion of the screen is copied to your clipboard.

A notification will appear in the lower right corner indicating your screenshot has been saved to the clipboard. Clicking on this notification opens the SNIP and Sketch application. Here, you can make basic edits to your screenshot. The SNIP and Sketch tool offers simple markup options, such as a marker, ballpoint pen, or highlighter. You can change colors and doodle directly on the image if you wish.

Once your screenshot looks the way you want, you have a couple of options. First, you can copy the image again and paste it into an email or a document like Word. Simply click the copy button and then use Control-V to paste the image where you need it.

Alternatively, you can save the screenshot as a file. When you click to save, the tool will ask where you want to store the file. I usually save temporary files on my desktop so they are easy to find. You can rename the file at this stage if you prefer. Once saved, the screenshot appears as an image file on your desktop.

If you need to upload the screenshot somewhere, like to a forum on my website, you can use the file upload option and select the screenshot you just saved. After uploading, the image will be visible as part of your post.

That covers the basic functions of the SNIP and Sketch tool. There are additional options and features within SNIP and Sketch, and I discuss those more in-depth in my Windows beginner course.

You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below. Live long and prosper, my friends.
