Question About a Query

Hi, I put together a simple table to insert expenditures (date, amount, what, where, category, and payment type). I have a second table with a list of categories, and their corresponding budget amount. Now, I would like to design a query that would display each category's name, the budget amount for that category, and next to it a total of all the expenses for that category, for a particular month. It probably is simple, but as a beginner I can't figure it out. Thank you very much for your help.

You may not like to hear this, but combining Budget with Actual is not as easy as you think.  It is quite a complex process.  The Budget Table needs to be separate from expenses.  You need to think about Banking table as well.  I would go back to your design stage, work the problem in Excel, like Richard does, highlight your relationships and see what Join queries are needed.  I just finished a similar database rebuild.  It was very complex.  Joining Budget to Actual required a lot of queries.  In fact, I ended up building the Budget in its own database and then worked backwards to fix the tables and queries until I was able to put the Budget data into the Expenses Database.  Good luck with this.  Its a lot of work but worth the effort.
