Parentchild Database

Hello Richard,
I am interested in building a Family Database, but
NOT a Genealogy Database.
I would like it to show Parents (MainContactT), then
show their children (ChildContactT).
Is what I have listed here the right way to do this?
Thank you,
David
P.S. Did you like the Star Trek Reference in my last Forum Question?

MainContactT
IDAutoNumber
FirstNameShortText
MiddleNameShortText
LastNameShortText
LastNameIDNumber
ChildIDNumber
AddressShortText
CityShortText
StateShortText
ZipCodeShortText
PhoneNumberShortText
DOBDate
NotesLongText
**************************
ChildContactT
IDAutoNumber
LastNameIDNumber
ChildIDNumber
FirstNameShortText
MiddleNameShortText
LastNameShortText
AddressShortText
CityShortText
StateShortText
ZipCodeShortText
PhoneNumberShortText
DOBDate
NotesLongText

Again, Thank you.

I suppose there's probably a few ways you could set them up. I don't know that I'd do a LastNameIDNumber. I'd probably do a many to many relationship, so the child can link to both parents (or more in some cases), and they can have multiple children.

Many-to-Many

ParentT
ParentID Autonumber
Other Fields Unique to Parent

ParentXChildT
ParentXChildID Autonumber
ParentID Number
ChildID Number
Other Fields Unique to Relationship of Parent/Child

ChildT
ChildID Autonumber
Other Fields Unique to Child

Hi David, Adams way is the way to go. Think about it A parent may have many children and a child may have many parents. (many to many) Another way to look at it is the family as an Entity. Think about what you want to do with the data. If you want to mail a Greeting card to the Family you might need a family name. If the person is single then it might be Ms. Sue Smith or ( Mr. John Doe and Ms. Mary Smith).   Build you database to accommodate your needs. I built mine with the Entity as the starting point. ie. Parker Family which could consist of individuals with same last name or not.  HTH  John
