Sharepoint List Vs Db Table
Michael Medici

All,

I have a need to deploy my db on the network.  I have the option to export the tables to a sharepoint list or I could simply separate the data tables and just store it on sharepoint and point the forms ACDE to that db.

What are the pros/cons of doing either?  I've already done a test export to a sharepoint list and it seems very restrictive;

     - Sharepoint doesn't support autonumber
     - To continue to add capabilities, adding fields in sharepoint doesn't really work well
     - Doesn't seem to be any security on the list, anyone with access to the sharepoint site can open the list.

Any thoughts from the experts?

Do you have to use SharePoint? SQL is so much better

Do you have remote users? If not, Is storing on a network folder an option instead?

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the reply.

Here is the scenario.  I am a contractor to the customer and trying to deploy a db that allows my staff on-site access to it.  The customer uses sharepoint as well as onedrive.  I guess I could keep it in my local folder that is shared on onedrive, but it would have been so much easier to just put the database on sharepoint for access.  When I split the db and tried having it go to sharepoint direct (creating lists), there are just too many restrictions to be helpful.

How would I go about doing it as an SQL?

You do not want to share the backend across multiple users using OneDrive. It will corrupt.

Take a look at this for some options.The two easiest would be to use SQL server, or to just setup a machine inside of your customers LAN to remote into. SharePoint is just a headache.

Thanks again Adam.  The SQL option would probably be the right one, but that will take me some time to come up to speed on it and I need to get the customer to spin a server up.  Remote desktop is definitely a non-starter at this company as they lock that down.  Understood about using onedrive as I have seen issues with Onedrive and access, specifically I can't save an excel file created through VBA to my folders because of OneDrive.  Very disappointing.

I've purchased the Sharepoint seminar training and will dig into that and perhaps I can get that to work for me.
