Access Certification
CornCobb07

Based on my experience I would tend to agree.  Simply passing the certification exams is mere "head" knowledge whereas being able to perform on a job is a whole different thing.  I am trying to get my Microsoft certifications so that I have something on paper that will acknowledge that I am not a novice.  I have no "formal" computer education.  Like Richard, I am completely self-taught, but have not had the success in the work place that Richard has.  I'm hoping that certifications will help me get a very challenging and higher paying job!  Only time will tell if that holds true or not.  I'm not sure how to convince a potential employer that I have the know-how without something on paper.  Any thoughts anyone?

Reply from Richard Rost:

Well, I wouldn't say that I've had "success in the workplace." I pretty much hated every "real" job I ever had until I started my own business. :)

Personally, if I were to try and go back out into the "real" job market (which I would probably never do... but just to play Devil's Advocate) I would put together a kick-ass portfolio of my work. Treat it like an artist or an architect would. Make some killer Access databases and submit those to prospective employers along with a FUNCTIONAL resume listing all of your skills. Heck, even make a web site showing screen shots and downloadable samples of your databases.

That's how you impress prospective employers. If I had to pick between 2 people, one had a bunch of (IMHO) meaningless certifications, and the second one showed me a killer portfolio and a web site with all kinds of stuff like that, I'd go with the 2nd one. Then again, this strategy will probably only work with SMALL or mid-sized companies. BIG companies like to see those padded resumes and certifications... but small companies are where the FUN (and job-growth potential) is at.

Just my two cents... but again, I'm NOT an employer (anymore). I haven't been for 10+ years now, and I've been self-employed since 1994. I have no idea what the job market environment looks like today. This is just my opinion.
