Lookup Field Option
Lee Shastid

I know the lookup field is frowned upon by developers in tables so. In saying that I am a little confused here or drawing a blank for some reason. I want to create a new table and get the data from another table. The data will be linked to the same information I want to draw that data from. So how do I do that without using the lookup field? Example of what I'm trying. Lets say I have a Laptop in my table and the new table would be linking the accessories to that laptop. So I want to have a field in the accessories table that I choose what item it is linked to.

Lee in a relational database, we go from the parent to the child, not the other way around. So your first table will be Computer table, and it will have one primary key, ComputerID.

Then you will have a separate table that contains all the possible accessories call it Accessory Table and it will have only one primary key accessoryID.

At this point, you will create a child's table for the computer table called "Computer Accessory Table". Its primary key will be ComputerAccessoryID. The next field will be a foreign key to the computer table, and it is only computerID the next field will indicate the accessory that that computer has, and that is just a foreign key to the accessories table. So you will have AccessoryID as the next field.

I for some reason am not grasping the relationships. I had watched over and over and at some point the light bulb will click on. Its just me for some reason. Needless to say it is my weak point.

Lee don't worry, you'll get there. We all went through that process.
