Serial Numbers Barcodes Upc Codes Oh My

I am feeling confused about using serial numbers, barcodes, UPC codes... and how each is used.  I am trying to imagine how i would set up a system.  We have a mobile dog grooming business and will be making merch.  so we would buy things like coffee cups, tumblers, tshirts and we would personalize them for our clients.  So our inventory would be the raw materials put together into a finished item.  i am trying to figure out how to set up the inventory situation.  I would scan in the raw materials whichh could have variations of size, color, flavor, scent etc...then create an item which would pull out of inventory the raw materials and create a finished item. Can someone help me understand how the serial numbers and such would work?  The lessons showed adding an item and the quantity increasing. but then the serial numbers couldnt be used more than once.  I am super confused how to go about scanning stuff in and out with everything having a different number.  Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Sami,  My question was more aimed at assigning serial numbers, product codes, upc codes, barcodes and such.  I wanted to let you know what my process was to give you an idea of what we are trying to do.  for raw material we purchase do we use the vendors product number?  then when we put them together do we make our own product code? and where would serial numbers come into play... i am just confused at what codes would be used at each step of the process.  So sorry for being confusing

Hi Shallena

1) for raw material we purchase do we use the vendors product number?  YES
2)then when we put them together do we make our own product code? YES

3)where would serial numbers come into play? You only need serial numbers for items that have warranties and are not identical. I'll give you an example. If you buy a cell phone, you need to know the serial number because that will determine when it was purchased and when the warranty will expire. On the other hand, if you are selling t-shirts, you do not give a t-shirt a serial number. A product number is more than sufficient.

Needless to say, these could be fields on the table, but the primary key of that table will always be product ID, which is an auto number.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you need more help.

That does help Sami, thank you for taking the time to explain. As i am watching the lessons I try to figure out how I can use the information for my own needs.  I watched the information on barcodes and then this one on serial numbers and totally confused myself. Not super hard to do lol!  Thank you again!
