Full Names for Couples
Carolyn C

I have a customer database with FirstName and LastName as normal.  However, many of our customers are couples or partners.  So, I did make a Customer extension table and put the  FirstName2 and LastName2 in that Table.   Now for FullName.  I understand the FirstName and LastName , ie, Joe Smith concantenation  and I figured out how to get the FirstName & FirstName2 andLastName  ie, Joe & Mary Smith, but I am at a loss for putting both FullName fields together in one field.  I have tried the IIF and not null in a query but my syntax is all off.  Is there a clear instruction on syntax etc.  when trying to add a text (the & in Joe & Mary) that I might be getting confused with.  I am not sure if I am on the right track.

Reply from Richard Rost:

This is a bit tricky and can involve several permutations. What if you're missing person two? What if they have different last names? There are a lot of variables. I usually write a custom function for this that can address them all. I'll try to cover this in a future lesson. If you're certain that you have both people and you want to just concatenate them together you would say:

BothNames: FirstName1 & " & " & FirstName2 & " " & LastName
