Richard, Thank you.  I did try that and it told me I was appending 2(or 3 or 4 records) when I was only trying to append one.

I did find a solution.  It calls for using the "Find Unmatched Query Wizard".
It is a good wizard!! I use it (UnmatchedPostingsQ) to look for the CheckingIDs and show me only the records from CheckingT that are not in JournalT.  I then use UnMatchedPostingsQ as the basis for my append query.  Works great!  And it makes sure that the stupid human (me) doesn't post any duplicates.

Oh no... it's no problem at all... that's what this forum is for. It's just very hard for me to troubleshoot some situations without seeing a copy of the database. I'm glad you figured it out on your own... that's the BEST way to learn.
