In the query QBE editor, you can tell it to sort last name, just make sure last name is to the right of the date. If it isn't, add last name a 2nd time after the date, set it to sort and then uncheck the show box.

Or, in the report, at the bottom of the report in design view, in the Grouping and sorting area, you can add an additional sort. Here is a video on report grouping and sorting: Grouping
