Integer Division in Excel

Doesn't Excel support integer (with the \ "backslash")?? Maybe Access isn't always the red-headed stepchild. Or is that a function in VBA? And/or in SQL?

Yeah, I see that Excel has it's own way of doing it. But it doesn't look as slick as the backslash.

Good question. Excel VBA supports \ but if you want to do integer division in Excel (like in the cells) use the QUOTIENT function.

=QUOTIENT(10,3)

This returns 3.

You can also use the INT function to truncate the result of regular division:

=INT(10/3)

That also gives 3, but there's a difference. INT always rounds down toward negative infinity, while QUOTIENT just drops the remainder.

So if you're dividing negative numbers, INT(-10/3) gives -4, but QUOTIENT(-10,3) gives -3.

Use QUOTIENT if you want true integer division like VBA's \ operator.
