Adding fields to form
Linda

Hi Richard,
At first, thanks for your incredible hulpfull free Access lessons on YouTube.
I just created a tabel with a matching form. After this I decided to add another field/variable in the tabel. Now isn't Access automaticaly acchieving this change in my form. How could I manualy manage this?
Thanks in advance, Linda

Reply from Richard Rost:

When you create a form and add fields from the "existing field list" Access creates an SQL STATEMENT in the Record Source property of the form using only the fields from your table that you use in the form. I PERSONALLY HATE THIS! I can't stand that Microsoft decided to construct forms this way. Access didn't used to work this way. You use to have to PICK a table or query FIRST and then you could add fields. So the problem is that your form's recordsource property looks like this now:

SELECT FirstName, LastName FROM CustomerT

That's it. Now if you add a field to the CustomerT, your form isn't automatically updated. So you have to go in and edit that SQL Statement which is a LOT of work for a new user... or you can select the "show fields from all tables" option which, again, is a pain.

So what I recommend (and I show this in my lessons) is to just change that Record Source property. It's in the FORM PROPERTIES. Just set it equal to your TABLE'S NAME and then you'll be able to use any fields from that table.
