I believe I've sussed what's causing the problem.

The database is split on one drive and the back end resides on a networked drive (say G:).  But the programmer on a second machine doesn't have a G: dive available so has his back end data on say K:

I would have thought that it should be possible to still open the front end by holding down the shift key and then re-link the back end to his network drive.  But it seems not to be so.

I have tried this on a number of databases and it is the same for all of them.

You SHOULD be able to relink the drive, but a better solution might be to use a network share with UNC pathnames, like:

\\SERVER\SharedFolderName\MyBackEndDatabase.ACCDB

Then just point ALL of the computers to the same share name.
