Destination Folder
Kathy Johnson

Is there a way to allow the user to select the destination folder for the backup? The end user of this database (single user database not over a network) may want to use a thumb drive instead of a google drive. I would like an option box to popup to allow the selection of a destination location.

Code Vault: Pick a File with FileDialog

See the notes for the Pick Folder option.

You can close this thread. I am so confused. The code in the code vault only gives me an option to open a file and then it throws an error that the file doesn't exist. I don't want to open a file. I want to select a folder to save the backup to just like the manual save a backup in access allows you to do. Guess I just don't know how to put these lego pieces together yet.

I will just write a msgbox to the user to go to file, save as, backup database.

What code did you try?

Example:
MyTextFieldHoldingTheFileName = PickFile("C:\MyFiles\", True)

From your original post, it wasn't clear whether you were trying to do this with VBA or just using Access's built-in File > Save As > Back Up Database option.

If you're just using the normal Access backup and not writing any code, then what you suggested last is honestly the best and simplest solution. Once you start doing this with VBA, it becomes a different (and more advanced) problem entirely.

I was trying to put a button on the menu form for the user to backup the database but have the option of selecting where to save the backup file to (ie a flash drive). The button would be the gentle reminder to backup before leaving the database. This is a database that I will be using for now but when I leave the position of Treasurer whoever comes behind me will have to use. Moving from QuickBooks because of the expense. I think I have got a good product, just trying to tweek the fine details.

BTW - I really enjoy your classes and tech help videos. They have taught me lots. I used to program in DBase in the early 80s but have lost so much of that knowledge by depending on commercial products.

Your best bet would be to set an automatic nightly backup.

Richard Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. I really appreciate it.
The extended tech help video about backing up is what got me started in this process. My problem is saving it to a flash drive (could be D:/??  or  E:/??  etc.) instead of a set destination folder. I haven't been able to wrap my brain around the code that Alex suggested.  From your extended tech help video ~ 8:15 is there a way to change the DestFile to a user input? Guess I am asking for the "Magic Wand" in this case cuz it just isn't clicking for me.

Did you try Pick a File with FileDialog as I stated in a previous reply?

This works for picking a File or a Folder.
When you call the function set the second argument to True for a Folder picker.
Alex shows the syntax above in his reply.

Kevin That's the code that got me confused. When I tried to use it, i kept getting an error that the file/folder didn't exist. It never gave me an option to select D:\ or E:\ even though the flash drive was in place. I don't want it to go to C:\MyFiles. I need it saved off the hard drive and not in the cloud.

I truly appreciate everyone stepping in to guide me on this. For whatever reason, this one just has me befuddled. Hopefully, as I continue to go through the classes it will click.  For now I will stick with a message box that reminds me to backup the file.

Can you share a screenshot of the what happens after you click on the button to run the code above.
