Options on Progression to Access Developer Classes
Greg Miller

I joined as a Tech Help Gold member through YouTube about 18 months ago to work through the Access Beginner and Expert classes.  I also enrolled in Learning Connection so that I could progress more quickly than one course a month. I have now completed the last Expert class and intend to proceed with the Advanced and Developer classes. Upgrading from Gold to Platinum membership is pretty much three times the cost of Gold membership and it looks as though I could buy all the Advanced and Developer classes more cheaply by using my Learning Connection 50% discount. My Tech Help Gold membership then appears to be redundant but I am not sure what the implications of cancelling my membership would be. I think I would no longer have access to Tech Help videos and the Code Vault but would I still have access to the classes I received as a result of my Gold membership? If I wanted to retain access to Tech Help videos and the Code Vault could I do that as a Silver member?

As a Silver member you would still have access to the Extended Cut Tech Help videos but you would lose access to the Code Vault.
You would still have access to any classes, seminars and templates you have previously purchased.

Greg Great questions - and you've put a lot of thought into your next steps, which I really appreciate. Let me break this down for you:

If you cancel your TechHelp Gold membership, you would lose access to the paid TechHelp Extended Cut videos, the Code Vault, and the ability to download the databases that come with those lessons. You would also forfeit your Gold membership perks. As for the free courses you received monthly as part of your Gold membership, you actually lose those once you cancel TechHelp (Silver, Gold, or Platinum). Only Learning Connection members keep all delivered courses permanently - even after cancellation - since those are "owned" once delivered and paid for. But the TechHelp free monthly classes are perks that are only available while you're an active member. If you lost those, you'd then have "gaps" in your course list which would mean your Learning Connection membership would then try to "deliver" those missing courses to you - so you'd be paying for them again.

If you want to keep access to TechHelp Extended Cuts but not the Code Vault/database downloads, you could downgrade to Silver. Silver members still get all Extended Cut videos, but only Gold and above get the Code Vault and the downloads. You would keep any free courses you got as a Gold member as long as you stay at least a Silver member. As long as your TechHelp membership stays active, even at the Silver level, your free class perks are safe.

Since your Learning Connection membership lets you permanently keep all classes you receive and gets you a 50% discount on extra courses, your idea to buy Advanced and Developer courses with your discount does make sense if you want to own them outright. Platinum makes sense for people who want the TechHelp perks and are happy with the one free Developer course per month. A lot of people tell me that's a good pace for them since the Developer lessons are a lot more in-depth and demanding of your time than the Beginner/Expert ones.

So if you plan on buying the Developer lessons thru your LC discount, and you don't care about the Code Vault or TechHelp downloads, then yes, it would make sense to downgrade to Silver. Don't forget, if you primarily watch the lessons here on my website, and don't care about watching them on YouTube, you can get a 20% discount on an annual membership by signing up here.

Let me know what you decide and I can take care of that for you. Contact me via the customer service page though. I don't always catch Forum posts.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply Richard. I think the best way forward for me would be to downgrade my TechHelp membership to Silver and to buy the Advanced and Developer courses through the Learning Connection. I have not made much use of the Code Vault/database downloads over the past 18 months and so I do not think I will miss it.  The annual membership direct sounds like a sensible adjustment to my current membership; although it does introduce the complexity of exchange rate variation as I currently subscribe through YouTube in £Sterling. I will contact you via the customer service page to make the necessary adjustment as you suggest.

Greg yep. Sounds perfectly reasonable. While I to try to offer as much value as possible with my different membership options, I don't like seeing people spend money on stuff they're not using (like handbooks, downloads, Code Vault, etc.) which is why I have so many membership options available. Something for everyone.

But on the other side of the coin, I also realize that sometimes people get membership paralysis or there's too many options to pick from. I've tried to program the website's AI to direct people into the best membership for them, but it's not perfect. That's why, if any questions in the future, just let me know and I'll tell you what the best thing to do is.
