Multiple Foreign Keys - Relate To Self
Richard Rost

Q: I've been given the task to create a relatively simple database. In the one table I have the fields for Supervisor and Co-supervisor, both of which would require foreign keys from the same table. I'm not exactly sure on how to do that and any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using MS Access 2003 and while not exactly a newbie, I'm still too close to that title to be anything else. > Marisa

A:Marisa, you can have multiple forign keys in one table. For example, you might have fields called ServiceRep, SalesRep, and PhoneRep, and they all point to an EmployeeID in an Employee table.

You can even have a table relate back to itself. Think of it like this: you have a PersonT table with these fields:

PersonID
FirstName
LastName
FatherID
MotherID

Now your FatherID and MotherID are just PersonIDs that relate back to the PersonT table. You can make a query to show each person in the person table with his father and mother just by bringing two copies of the PersonT into your query and linking the fields accordingly.
