I have a payment database where clients may pay portions or their total billed balances. I have been trying to figure on how to save the remaining balance and can't seem to find a way to store the balnace due.

Example:step 1

fee - payment = balance due.

step 2:
Balance due - payments = balance due

Step 2 doesn't work. Access sees this as circular logic.

Any ideas on how to get around this. I need to store the balance due to perform step 2.

I tackle this problem in my Payables Seminar. I use the example where you make payments on a bill that's due, but the same concept works in reverse (customers making payments on your invoices). Same concept, just different labels.
