Separate Street Number from Name

Question from Glenn: I want to create a list of addresses. I saw in your video that you like to put the whole address in one field instead of making a field for the number and a field for the street (19 Madison Court, 151 Colony Lane, 42 Hancock Lane, etc). But when you have a listing of a number of different streets how can you sort them by the street name and not the number when you create a query or report?

My Answer: Putting the entire address into one field suits MY purposes, and has been just fine for the majority of people I've built databases for. However, if YOU have a need to separate out the different pieces in YOUR database, then by all means build it that way. If you need to separate the number from the street name or the type (st, dr, ave, etc.), it's much easier to enter the data that way up front than to try to separate it later.

Now, if you're given data that way and you need to separate it, then you have to play some magic tricks with Access and use string manipulation functions to try to break everything apart. I cover some of that in this TIP: http://599cd.com/X4KPCZ

I also covered some of this in Access Expert 14 where I show you how to break apart FirstName and LastName if you're given them in a single field: http://599cd.com/XACX14
