When I want to change something in my database design, I make a copy, do the changes and when I am happy with the changes I replace the old version with the new version. But in the meantime someone could have added data to the old version of the database and when I replace it, these additions are gone. Is there a way to update the database design without losing data?

I'd split the Db so you can send updates of the FE to your users.
