Dlookup
tom s

I have been handed 2 large tables from elsewhere.  What Dlookup to work.

Tutorials show commonality of 2 tables is a number called "CustomerID"

In my case, the commonality is a TEXT String called "Customer Name".

I have not been able to successfully fiddle with the criteria part of the Dlookup to use text string.  Perhaps I am doing it wrong?   Your tutorials and documentation are always using a CustomerID number as commonality.

Must it be a number ID or is there a way to use the Customer name text string?

In Excel the Vlookup works fine with a text string.  Is Access different?

Reply from Alex Hedley:

Glossary: DLOOKUP
Tip: Microsoft Access DLOOKUP Function
DLOOKUP Without Programming

=DLOOKUP (Field, Domain, Criteria)

Field: You have a Field name so this could be "CustomerID", "Customer Name" etc
Domain: The Table / Query etc so this would be different as you have two different Tables.
Criteria: Optional.

What have you tried?

I'm not sure of your issue. Is it that you are trying to get the value of the Field "Customer Name" from either Table or are you trying to search for specific text in a Field?
