Merge Two Databases

Good morning Richard, Question for you. I'm trying to figure how to merge two copies of a database. I know this would involve use of a UNION query, but I need to be able to merge data from database B into database A with the caveat that I need to ensure two fields in selected records in database A are not overwritten by the data in database B. Those fields in certain records in database B will not have any data in them, but those fields in the rest of the records in database B may have updated data that needs to be copied into database A.

Maybe I could do an export to Excel of both databases, then merge the fields in Excel. This would overwrite the data from database B onto database A, except those fields in database B would be blank so they wouldn't overwrite anything in database A. Then import the updated Excel data back into database A.

Thoughts?

A union query is something that you would usually use to display data from two working tables in your database. This sounds more to me like you want to use an append query and add the data from database B into database A. You could use indexes with the no duplicates option to make sure you don't overwrite something. But without knowing more about the structure of your tables and exactly what you're trying to do it's hard for me to give you any better advice. You could use Excel if your data needs a lot of massaging by hand. I've been known to do that once or twice.
