Convert OpenOffice ODB to Access
Colin Enstone

Dear Richard,

Some years ago I worked through many of your courses and not having Microsoft Access had to use OpenOffice to produce ODB files.

Recently I bought  Microsoft Office Professional Plus and would now like to convert the ODB files to MDB files.

Please could you suggest the best way of doing this.

Kind Regards,
Colin Enstone.

I haven't used OpenOffice in many years, but from what I remember Microsoft Access cannot directly import ODB files. You will have to open up your database in OpenOffice and Export your information as CSV files - comma separated values - basically text files. Each table in your database will have to become one CSV file. Then you can go into Microsoft Access and import each CSV file into a table.

This shouldn't be a problem if you have multiple flat file tables however if you've got relationships then you have to figure out a way to relate them together using whatever ID field you had in OpenOffice. I could spend a very long time on how to do this and in fact that might make an interesting lesson so if anyone wants to see how to do this let me know.

Also, Access hasn't used MDB files in a while. They are now ACCDB files.

Good luck!
