Locations as assets

Good morning all.  Richard, I am laying out the form of my asset management data base before the final build.  I will be having a location feild in my AssetsT and parent child relationships to sub locations i.e. LobbyRestaurantCashierStand...or 7thFloorRoom712.

Guestroom 712 is also an asset that needs regular tracked preventative maintenance.  It will have child assets as well, air conditioner, television, etc.  Should I be creating it in two separate tables?  I am inclined to ad it in both AssetT and LocationT separately since the info in each is different.  Any thoughts on this would be great.

If it's the same type of "entity" (person, place, thing) then I don't see a reason to make a separate table. You could make an entity "type" so you could separate locations from items. It's up to you. Only you best know how to set up YOUR database. I know databases, but I don't know YOUR business as well as you do. Plus it's just turning 9am here in Florida and the coffee hasn't kicked in yet. :)

Fair enough...I am also undercaffinated at the moment.  I copied over the Asset Management stuff I built in the seminar and converted it to Location after removing a bunch of irrelevant fields.  Seems to be working pretty well with parent and child records.  If it is problematic later it is yet another lesson learned here.  I may build it both ways just for fun.  Thanks for the quick rely!

Doing it yourself, experimenting, and learning on your own through trial and error is the BEST way to learn. My job is just to show you what is possible. You take the Legos and assemble them however you want. :)
