As far as the grid goes, see if this tip helps you: Grid Lines v. Dots.

As far as the label overlapping the text box, make sure you place your text box far enough away from the left edge of the form to give your label enough room. When you create a new text box either from the controls or from the field list, the position you pick is where the TEXT BOX goes. Remember the label needs room to the left of that. Watch the lesson on moving text boxes and labels around independent of each other. (Beginner 1, Lesson 10, I believe covers that).
