Suspected Connection Issues

Hello, sir.  I am suspecting that a database I built is suffering from connectivity issues on the network it is on.  No actual runtime errors are occurring with the code, but I have some SQL in the code for filtering the data being entered and it acts like this filter is staying not or not updating.  This does not happen on a regular or predictive basis, and I have discovered that a simple Compact and Repair solves the issue. . . until the next time.  The users cannot seem to identify what really triggers the problem.  Do you have a list of symptoms that can be expected from network connection issues?

That's always a tough one. My Troubleshooter doesn't really go into network problems. Please tell me you have the database split properly and you've got a back-end database on a server and each user has a copy of the front-end on their workstations. Please. If not, there's your problem. NEVER run an ACCDB over the network. The ACCDB/E file should be physically ON that computer. Aside from that, have you run any LAN tests to make sure you don't have any general connectivity problems? A bad network will cause your database to misbehave.

So far, the split seems to be working.  I had no idea that networks would cause so many problems, especially when I haven't faced them in the past with other projects on the same network. Oh well, I love to learn so I'm down to address a few problems!  I have also ran some performance tests.  I'm doing them at different points of the day to see if network traffic is a factor.  Thank you for the information!

That's what I'm here for. Yeah, Access can be fickle when run over a network, ESPECIALLY if your network traffic isn't pristine. I have zero problems here in my office, but I'm running on a Gigabit switch so it's nice and fast, and it's JUST ME. If you've got a slower network (or heaven forbid are running over wireless) and a dozen or more users, you're asking for trouble. Then it's time to upgrade to SQL Server. Those lessons are coming. :)
