Clearing Combo Boxes

Hi Richard:

I was watching Beginner 8 in my courses.  I see in beginner 8 has how to create combo boxes and also to use a combo box to search for a record in a database.  How can i clear the combo box after I search for a record?

At the Beginner level, with that kind of a combo box, you really can't. You can do it at the Advanced level with a macro, or some VBA at the Developer level using an AfterUpdate event.

I understand what you are saying.  I was able to get it work to clear the combobox after i do a search.  I created a button to clear it and wheni click the clear button clears the combo box and and data in the form and also created a button to show all data again.  The combobox i have in my form for contact name to search for contact it field I have in my contact table labeled contact name.  I have lastname and firstname.  I would like to have the combo box in my form to show contacts names not be able to enter the new contact in the combobox every time i neter a new contact in my contactf.  I don't want  to go back to the table to enter the contact in the contactname field.  I wnt to have the combobox with lastname, firstname and for the contact to go in the combobox after I enter new contact in my form so I don't have to go back and forth from the ContactF back to the ContactT everytime.  I understand if you are very busy and swamped.  If you want me send you my database so you ca se

I know will be paid techhelp if you can look at my database.  That why I'm asking you first before i fill out the form and send you my database.

No. Looking at your database is not "paid TechHelp." TechHelp has to be a question in the form of "how do I...?" Troubleshooting your database or fixing your database or adding things to your database is not TechHelp. And as my Consulting page says right now, I'm completely booked up. I don't have time to be looking at files. Sorry. What you need will probably involve a little programming which is probably beyond your skill level right now. Keep learning. Keep watching the lessons. Work your way up through the Expert series to the Developer series, and you should have a better understanding of how to do this. For me to just keep answering your questions with answers that are over your head does you a disservice. I WANT you to learn this stuff. That's what you're here for. But you have to learn how to walk first before you can run.

It's like explaining nuclear fusion to someone from the year 1500. They just don't have the science background to comprehend it. You need a better understanding of combo boxes and relationships before you jump into event programming and VBA.

Please don't think that I'm being rude. I'm not. I'm just trying to explain it as politely as possible. I had the same situation with my daughter. When she was about 8 or 9 years old, I took her to see a movie. While we were waiting for the film to start, she asked where the Moon came from. I did my best to explain to her that about 4.5 billion years ago, a Mars-sized planetoid struck the Earth and most of our mantle ended up in orbit, slowly coalescing into what we have today as the Moon. She gave me a blank stare and proceeded to eat her popcorn. Without a good working knowledge of some basic astrophysics, what I was explaining to her was meaningless. Today, she knows that stuff pretty well after years of schooling. Keep learning. You'll get there.
