Distribute Database to Client
Beau Tanner

So, I have a working version of my database, and I tried sending the files (tables & admin) to the client and ran into a major problem: file path could not be found.

The database was set up in our office in Asotin on our internal network.  When our client 4 hours away tried to open the docuement, he was not able to since he (obviously) has no access (pun not intended) to our database.

So, how do I make this database distributable so that he can use it on his end.  It is a split database and the network path is what is screwing everything up.

Thanks for your help.

You either have linked tables that need the location changed or if you are using the database across that far of distance, you're probably going to want to implement a remote option as well. Check these out.

If this is something you made for someone else and they're just getting the copy and going off to do it on their own, they will need to setup the linked tables on their end to where they will store the backend. If it's something that you are using with them, you're going to want one of those online options.

Thanks, Adam.

I had split the database here in the office, because we had multiple people entering data and testing pages as I developed it.  Now, we want to hand off the database to our client.  We don't care to store the info here in our office.  The error we received after I emailed it to him, when he tried opening the File_admin.accdb was that it couldnot find the network path.  So I was not even able to relink the database on his end to the File_tables.accdb on his end.

Is there a way to package and distribute this database so that they can save it/link it/whatnot on their local network?  Is that even possible?

You could just put it back togethor and then have them split it on their end.

How do I reassemble the database?  Does Rick have a tech help video or anything?

You might also want to verify you can decompile your code and that theres nothing in the load event of the first form that refers to any file or location on your network.

I do this with my db in my office.
You have to know what their path is for the server.  Both my local machine and my remote machine are in the same location off the c:\ drive so that helps.
Then you have to use the link manager and manually type in the link in the Front End db and choose the relink all option using their path information.
If it is on a server you have to fully qualify the path like: \\server\data\AccessApplication\myDatabaseBE.accdb
I don't use mapped drives to specific letters.
Send those files to them.
You should be able to have them distribute their Front End to each machine then.
One thing to note - I do NOT use the ACCDE type file so I'm not sure how that will work if you do.
I'm fortunate in that I have a remote software that allows me to do darn near anything I need to do on any of my machines.

Beau as for how to put it back together, you just delete the linked tables in the front end and then import them from the back end back into the front end directly. As always when deleting anything make a backup.

Are they going to be running a split database on that end with multiple users? If so, then you'll need to know the path to where the backend file is going to be. If NOT, and it's just one person using the DB, then I would just pull the tables back into the frontend file and send them a single file to work with.
