append query
Sally

I did an append query. All data was updated just fine. I noticed that the primary key (the contactID) numbers skipped from 500 to 1000. Why did it skip or what did I do wrong? How can I get the primary key field to renumber itself sequentially?
Thanks for your help

Reply from Richard Rost:

Sally, you have no control over Autonumbers. There is no way to "renumber" them. Once they're assigned, that's pretty much it. WHY do they sometimes skip? Well, there are many reasons, but here's one: let's say you add 50 records, then delete those 50 records. The next record you add is going to be 51, because those 50 numbers were "burned." Why did YOUR numbers skip from 500 to 1000? I'm not sure. I'd have to look at your database. If those records aren't RELATED to anything else, you could always just copy them all to a new table (giving them new Autonumbers starting at 1) and then delete the old table, renaming the new one. However, if your records are related to any other table, DON'T do this because it will scramble your data links.
