Could not lock file. (Error 3050)

Richard,

We have a database where some users have read/write access and some have read only.  It's on a file share on the server.  Sometimes, when the read/write user gets in first, then the read only tries to get in, we get this error:  "Could not lock file. (Error 3050)  The operating system will not allow Microsoft Jet to create a lock file (.LDB) in the same directory where the database file (.MDB) resides.  You need to have write privileges to the directory that contains the database you are trying to open."
The read/write and read only permissions are set on the database file.  Any ideas?

Reply from Richard Rost:

Generally, even to use an Access database for read-only purposes you still have to have read/write access to the file at the Windows system level. There are temporary files that Access needs to be able to modify (like the LDB file that tracks record locking). Also, check and make sure that your read/write users don't have EXCLUSIVE access set to on. This would also prevent other users from getting in.
