Importing Data from Excel
Julia Kauffman

I am designing a database that will track employee training and certifications.

I will receive the initial employee data from HR in an excel sheet.  It will include the following columns of information
LastName            FirstName           Position                Manager              Store     etc

My database will have separate tables for Position / Manager / Store etc.

What do I need to consider or be aware of when importing the information?

Is this a one time import or ongoing?
Just in the example you provided I can see at least 4 tables.  More depending on what etc is.
People
Positions
Stores
Training

Work with a back up COPY.
Get your tables pretty solid first using test data.
If you need to, go back through the courses you have.  Beginner series covers planning your db.  Brush up on relationships and be very comfortable with them. Check out Many-to-Many

Tons of resources on the site for importing data from Excel. Generally I recommend importing to a temporary table and then using action queries to move the data into your own tables.
