Freight Tracking 2nd Try
Shane Berarducci

Good Evening,

Thank you all for your previous attempts to help.  I realized I had fundamental relational issues and have attempted to fix them and am now finding moderate success.

I fashioned my attempt after the order/invoice videos and am making progress on the form to take the part of the manual table entry

I will post screen caps after this is approved however the questions are:

1: I have a single form with two subforms linked to the freightorder_idt and the freightorderdetails_idt  The problem I am having is, everything seems to be working properly.  I can add records and save them however the freightorder_id is not being populated into that field in the freightorderdetails_idt.  I think that is a fundamental relational issue, or perhaps the way I have built the form but ideally:

You would enter the customer and order information and that would generate a primary autonumbered key and then you would use the bottom form to populate the orderdetails table pulling the orderid from the upper part of the form.

Thank you

Shane

Check Link Master Fields/Link Child Fields in the subform and make sure they are set.

Thank you, Definitely not set

I tried to set it but I got the message "cannot build link between unbound forms"

I do not want to be told exactly how to bind the forms together but if you could point in in a good search direction so I can take a wing at figuring it out myself before spoonfeeding I would be very happy

Thanks

Shane

Shane being unbound just means you didn't specify, under the data tab in properties, which table to use.

Thank you for your pointer.

I have cleared that error, onto the next

When I go to set the link master and child fields when I set the master field to orderid it allows me to choose it as an integer, but when I go to set the child field it only gives me orderid with "short text" which causes a type mismatch error.

I am sure I am missing something simple, which makes me think I should be paying someone for their expertise.

Thank you

Shane

Check the Data Type in the table.

Thank you Kevin and Scott

I have figured it out thanks to your guidance!

My error was having a "master" form with two subforms, one for the freightorder and one for the freightorderdetails.  I instead simply moved the freightorderdetails onto the freightorder form as a subform and now everything is operating as it should.

Thank you so much, and scott you were right, I guess I didn't get enough coffee and I put the wrong data type in the table which proved to be especially fun to fix!

Thanks again

Shane

Shane one bit of advice if I may.  Before you get to deep into your project I believe that going through the courses at least through Expert 1 or 2 will make your journey much easier.  Actually build the databases Richard is making.
There is much to be said for watching and then doing that helps you retain what you are learning.

I don't know if you have watched it yet but also go watch the Relationships.  That one will apply to any database you make.

Hey Scott,

Thank you for your advice, it is good advice.  My day job is operating a small airline so my time is extremely limited, but I will take your advice and do the expert 1 and 2

I think I've watched that many hours of Richards content for free already so buying some of it would be a good thing

Thanks again for your help!

Shane
