Database Won't Load

Hi everyone.

I'm hoping someone can help, In trying to get my database working the way I wanted from my last post, I've watched some more videos and now changed my tables, relationships and queries. This has all been going well until this morning when I made a relationship change from the customer table and the cylinder table.
I changed the relationship link from the CustomerID in both tables to a CylinderID and shortly after I made that change access crashed.
I couldn't load it up and had to restart windows in order to load up access. Now I can load up access but it keeps asking to back up the same file, I have backed this up but still can't get this version to load up. I tried opening access then the repair function on but still no joy.

I could go back and start making the changes I've done over the last couple of weeks but just concerned I might do the same again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated on what I have done wrong.

Gary I hope you are making backups. If not this points out a great reason that you should be. Especially before making any major change like you just did. That said go to the Troubleshooter page and run down the list. MAKE A COPY first incase you need to go back.

Yeah, sounds like you created some kind of loop, or really long calculation when you changed the replationship. Killing access was a bad move - sounds like it was trying to write something to the file at the time and that's corrupted the file.

If access locks up, always better to walk away and leave for 15/30 minutes or more to let it finish doing its calculations to avoid this situation. Assuming the file is corrupt, you'll have to go back to an earlier version

You are not going to have to re-install anything since you said you can load Access but not your db. I'm guessing the accdb file got corrupted. If Compact and Repair doesn't work, you may need to create a new empty db. Then try importing the objects from you old file - tables, forms, etc.

Dan he said Access crashed.  Different than having it Lock up.

Sometimes letting Access 'do it's thing' is not an option especially if you create an endless loop.
Pause / Break is the first choice to try and break in to the code.  Then if that doesn't work, about the only option is to kill the Access process using Task Manager.

Again this just points out the importance of good backups.  Even Richard makes goofs now and then - see the Disaster Recovery!

Didn't really have much of a choice with the access program just disappeared and closed by itself. It starts to load then just crashes and goes. Lucky this is my first own database I'm making so so data at the moment on stuff to see how it works.
I do have some backups going back as been learning access through the courses.
I just don't understand why or what I did? and if I don't know the mistake not sure how I'm going to do it again.

I will watch the video as well maybe I can save this from that.

If possible, open Access and the database on another PC.  You want to eliminate the possibility that the culprit is that one PC.

The Windows Event Viewer may reveal some clues about the crashes.  Sometimes it just says "AppHang" or "AppCrash".  But other times it gives you the exact cause (e.g. some DLL file, etc.) of the problem.

Yes, design changes and seemingly harmless VBA code could cause mysterious crashes.  But this hasn't happened to me in a long time (at least 10 years).  I thought Access had got better.  I rarely have any kinds of crashes or hangs nowadays.
