Renaming Fields
Sandra Truax

I am trying to rename my fields to no spaces, but I keep getting a Parameter Error when opening my database. My old field name was Entry Date, changed to EntryDate. I have updated it in the form, and it is working, but I keep getting a Parameter error twice referring to the old file name.  Is there any way I can do a search and replace of all forms and queries to update all instance to the new name?

Not that I know of, you can search the VBA code but I don't think you can search inside forms/queries. I would check if you have any combo boxes row sources that are still referring to the field. Or if the field name is used in any queries that are used in the form.

Hadn't thought about the combo boxes. Will check those. Thanks

What about the dependencies tool in the relationships ribbon?

You could always use vcs to export all the db info then just search for 'Entry Date'
Also it's a good habit to get into as a back up

Thanks Dan and Alex. The dependencies tool didn't help, and unfortunately I don't know what vcs means.  I just changed the name of the field back. Decided that was easier. Thanks for your suggestions.

Sandra -
i don't know how far along you are in your db but in my opinion changing to no spaces in your field names now is the way to go.  Painful as it is right now.  In the long run it will benefit you greatly.

Just remember if you don't make the change always surround your field names with the square brackets [].
Like this  [First Name] or [Entry Date]

Thanks Scott. I will give it another try. The original database works great, and I've been using it for years, but I am self trained so my primary keys are things like the last four digits of my credit card, etc., and I have lots of queries. I love Access and programming, but I'm retired and a recent widow, and just thought I would try to revamp it to autonumber IDs and no space names, and VBA instead of queries. I got a LOT of it working, but simple little things are giving me grief. Then I wonder if it's worth it since my original does what I want it to.

Have you compacted and repaired it?

As Scott said, not sure how far along the database is but is it worth considering creating a new one the correct way and then using append query to move your records?

Just thinking you could try moving all your queries first, see if you are still getting the error, then your forms, then reports etc. might help narrow down where the issue is

Lyle Bailey: Yes I tried that. I even created a blank database and imported all the forms, queries, tables, etc., but that didn't fix it.

Dan Jackson: I hadn't thought about trying to move things in stages. I'll give this a try. Thanks again everyone.

next try creating a new accdb then copy all over to it manually. that fixed it for me.
