The database I'm working on (my first) is a medical database for our rehabilitation dept.  There are 5 sub depts: Physical Therapy, Speech, Cardiac, etc. I have built the largest component, PT, and have it working well.  I envisioned having a master form, with buttoms leading to a "sub master form" for each dept. Each dept would have its own series of buttons to run the various reports/queries associated with it.  Similar to your early tutorials.  
As silly as this question may sound, what's the difference between this an a switchboard?  Are there advantages/disadvantages to either?  Or is a switchboard just a built in utility for doing what I described earlier?  I don't remember you mentioning switchboards so I'm just curious.

You are correct: a switchboard is just a built-in utility in Access for making menus. I don't use them (or teach them) because when they first came out, they were HORRENDOUS. They put a bad taste in my mouth because they just didn't work very well and were hard to configure.

Now, they're not so bad, but to be honest, I find that it's just as easy to make your own menus with unbound forms and command buttons like I show in my lessons. PLUS, by making your own menus you have much more flexibility... not only with the format of the menus, but with additional VBA code or any other goodies you want to throw in there.

Use switchboards if you like, but you'll be happier if you build your own menus.
