Subform Doesnt GrowShrink
Tim Gilbert

Hello

I'd appreciate any input about automatically resizing a subform.  I have a continuous subform in a main form that fails to resize.  I have set the "can grow" and "can shrink" properties to yes for each of these:
the main form,
the main form detail section,
the subform object,
the subform detail section,
the subform header section,
the subform footer section,
each of the text boxes in the subform detail section,
each of the text boxes in the subform footer section and,
each of the text boxes in the subform header section

Still the subform does not resize when I move to a different record on the main form.  What properties or settings am I missing?  I have already re-watched the "Can Grow, Can Shrink" video from 2021-03-10 and the "Can Grow, Shrink" from 2012-11-26.

Thank you.

If you're talking about using Can Grow/Shrink on the screen, it won't work.  They are for printing only, i.e. reports.

The Can Grow/Shrink properties for forms are also for printing, since Access lets you print forms too.  E.g. Open a continuous form on the screen, click File, Print, Print Preview, and you will see the complete data of the form printed in a report format, separated by pages.  That is what "Can Grow" does for a form.  (Printing an on-screen form is also called a "screen dump." It's often a useful feature to have.  And it saves you from having to design another report.)

On the screen, you have to physically resize the controls by modifying their .Height and .Width properties in order to "grow" or shrink them.

Just to be clear.  Are we discussing a FORM or a REPORT?

Thanks all

@Kevin - just so I am clear, I undertsand you comment to indicate the subform seen on screen will not change size (unless I print preview it) based on the number of entries.  Is that right?

@Scott - a form with subform

@Juan - there was no link in your comment.  Did you intend the word "this" to have one?

Tim - You can't use the Can Grow / Can Shrink in a regular form.  Those only work in REPORTS as Kevin indicated.

The link for Juans post is the blue Resize Forms

Hi Tim, that is correct.  It might have given you the impression that "Can Grow" works on the screen since it appears among the form's properties, but the tool tip at the bottom of the screen makes it clear that it works for printing only (see pic).

Tim, for your original objective, you need to use VBA to check the number of records in the subform, and change the subform's height and width accordingly.  You also have to check the main form's height and width -- because a run-time error occurs if the subform's dimensions exceed those of the main form's.  Moreover, in form view, the main form's height and width are actually stored in the InsideHeight and InsideWidth properties.  So this gives you a glimpse of the complexity of your objective.

Kevin - thanks for all the help.  I'm glad to have learned something new.  I'll put the VBA project to adjust the form height on my to-do list and in the interim, just make the form "taller" since the vast majority of the subform records only show between 2 to 6 items on the main form.

Thanks again!
