Better way of Sorting
Nathan Shepard

I tried in vain to get my software to work with the Sort Template.

I came up with a better way.  create a query for each field.  One for Ascending and one for descending.  Then use a menu to list the options.  The software I am writing is strictly for consumers.  Not for business.

Anyone see any issues with this procedure?  I have 13 fields per record.

Is it necessary to sort on more then one field at the same time?

Open to suggestions.

Jeff

What kind of trouble did you run into with the sorting? We may be able to help with it.

I think sorting on more than one field is extremely nice. For instance, you may want to sort by date, and then have many customers on that day and want to sort by customer name as well to find the information you want. Maybe you want to sort on even more things too, a city or something to break it down to the relevant information you want. It's very nice to have.

I am following the Sort Template.  It won't sort either Ascending or Descending for RecordID, and Class.  It displays Black on both fields.  I am skeptical about publishing the layout.  It is copyrighted material.

It works on First name and last name and state either ascending or descending.  My data files contain actual contacts.  I guess maybe I need to create 50 records of fake names.  RecordID and class is the problem.  It does nothing.

Yea if you have confidential information, block it out or copy the database and put test records in it. Can you share the code you have for the sorting? Do you get an error or it just does nothing?

This software is strictly for Consumers.  It meant to keep track of simple information on Friends, Relatives, Business, and Miscellaneous.  It what I consider a flat file.  I have a class table, and state table.  It does not do much of anything accept record.
the fields.  I have a routine for adding records, editing a record. Search and displaying a record, changing a record to an active or in-active status.  There is no deleting of records.  Plus it has various reports.  the sorting routine is will probably change to sorting on one maybe two fields at a time.  It will be menu driven.

I don't remember what he did in this tech help you're working off of. If it's code or a query with criteria. Can you share the code or what is doing the sorting so we can see anything that may be wrong?

I am not worried about someone using my code.  This is America.  Its known as "free enterprise.  I can share the code in the sort template forum.  As to whether I market the software.  That is a big "if".  I am retired and bored. Thank you for your help.

Sure if you can share the code in the sort template forum that you are using. No need to show/upload your template/ software, im just trying to help you fix the sorting problem if you want it fixed :)

Adam:

As soon as I add records that are not friends and relatives.  I will upload the sort template.  Give me a couple of days to create fake records.  I can post it there according to Richard.  Only buyers of the sort template can access that.  By copying the code any where else.  I could get sued.  For violating copyright law.  The penalties can be severe.  The last thing I want to do is hurt Richard, his family and his dogs.   After rereading your email.  It looks like you can access that sort template forum.  So give me a couple of days to create fake records and then I can copy the code over there.  I thank you for your help.
