RFID for ZEBRA in Visual Basic
John Gunter

I have been tasked with creating the following RFID solution(s).

* I Need a flexible RFID Label Reader/Encoder Code package
for a ZEBRA printer -written in MS Access Visual Basic
* Which -Must Handle automatically printing and encoding - Several hundred to several thousand passive RFID chips, as the run through the printer.
* I Need the routine to read RFID label information from current label being printed -then write that information (RFID Tag # and unique MS Access ID ) to a MS Access database while printing that self adhesive tag.

(Planning to use ZEBRA ZM400 printer with RFID option connected via a USB connection)

..I understand -from Zebra - I could purchase a expensive SDK kit, and professional license, ultimately using C#, JavaScript, C++, or XML, to create scripts for (Encoding) writing and, reading the unique RFID(s) IDs -as they pass through the printer - and encoding and printing that tag.

But I prefer to use MS Access and Visual Basic code.

Please advise!
Thank you,
John L Gunter

Do you know if this printer has a VBA-compatible library for it? If so, I'll make you the same deal I made someone about a Dymo Label Printer. I don't have one, but if you send me one, and it's possible, I'll write an interface for it.

Hi John, my old job involved mass-printing thermal barcode labels, also with a Zebra printer.  We used a third-party label design software to design and print labels, and also to import and export data to and from Access.  Even though we had an entire inventory/order system written in Access, for the thermal labels we used Access purely as a data depository, and let the label software handle the label design, data-gathering, and printing.  The label software took in Excel data exported from Access.  The Excel file was always the same name, and Access kept exporting to it.  When we opened the label software, the data would be all there and the labels ready to print.  Would that be enough automation for you?  If yes, I suggest you go this route instead of developing your own solution with VBA and SDK, which would surely be time-consuming and filled with uncertainties such as how well it would perform and how much future maintenance would entail.

There you go... from someone who has experience with it. I've never used a Zebra printer in my life. Then again, at the time I had never used a Dymo label printer either. LOL
