Global Search

Hello Richard:

Here again to ask another one of my
wierd questions.

I finished the search function for
fields I have pre-selected to be searched for.

The user can search each field one at a time
and I like that functionality.

What I would like to provide the user with as well
is the option to perform a global search where all
the fields I have selected are searched for at
the same time. I am pretty sure concatenation needs
to be used here.

I would then like to generate a dynamic combobox
or listbox of all the criteria found without the
need for the user to use the "find next" button
so that the user can pick from a list generated
and by pressing ENTER, the user is then taken to
that particular record.

Might there be a tech-tip or extended-cut video
tutorial on your website to do this?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Once again Richard, thanks for all you do!

Have you looked at the Search Form 2.0 video and database?
This sounds exactly like what you are describing.

Richard:

Let me just say one thing; You are the "Michael Jordan" of Access!

Thank you for all the help and responding to my posts.

Hello Scott:

This is exactly what I needed, although I would like to produce a dynamic ComboBox
after the search, but I guess using this method allows me to get the same result from
the form itself.

I will try to use only 1 text field to perform the global search, however, the way
Richard explains it in the SF 2.0 lesson certainly works for me.

Boy, there is just so much to learn with Richard!

Thank you again Scott.

You could make a combo box. That would involve a lot more coding. I'm sure I've covered that in one of my Developer lessons somewhere...

I am satisfied with 2.0 and the extended cut lessons!

Thanks again Richard!

Hello Richard:

I have created a query (CRPatientMainQ) based on my main form (CRPatientMainF) that has about 80 patients.

I then created a search form (CRPatientMain2F) like you explained in the Search Form 2.0 lessons
with record source being my query (CRPatientMainQ).

I specified for each search field the criteria parameters as you discussed
in the Search form 2.0 tutorials.

The search works fine with the LIKE parameter (wildcard) with no issue for
each field, however, when I access this query form, it only shows 9 records
and not the 80 records that I would like to search.

I am sure I am doing something wrong and hope to see if you can help.

I have a main form (CRPatientMainF), then I have the 2nd search form (CRPatentMain2F)
with the search fields on the top, record source for the search form is my query CRPatientMainQ.

The query is set to continuous forms on the default view and was constructed following your
instructions step by step.

When I access the query form to search, I only get 9 records instead of the 80 that exist on
my main form which is set to continuous form as well.

Again, the record source for my search form is set to my query that I created (CRPatientMainQ).

Totally confused.

Please help.

Thank you in advance as always...

I have re-done everything from scratch, the query form, the criteria and tables and now it seems to work So I probably missed something the first time around.

I also noted that some of my records had NULL values in them and when I would query with the search that particular field, it would return only those fields that had values in them. When I would clear and requery, Access would requery only those fields and not the rest of the database.

I don't know if this is a bug or something I might have to do (like you explained in one of your lessons) to add to the end of the criteria statement in the query OR ISNULL.

Thank you nonetheless.
