Calculate Table Fields

Richard,
Any updates since you created this video 22 months ago?  What did you learn from your research that you allude to in your Extended Cut.
For my part, I inherited an old Access 2013 database, upgraded to Access 2016.  Former user/owner used simple calculations to concatenate names and do simple math in the tables, with the expressions stored in the tables. These calculations seem to work fine and update without issue in the table; no issues on those in the past year.)  I admit I reserve more complicated calculations for queries.
Any new advice?  Insights?  Or do you still consider calculated table fields "evil"?

Hi Kent. You'll have to refresh my memory as it has been 22 months, and I'm old now (just turned 50) so I can't remember squat. Can you at least give me a time index where I mention it?

Sure.  It's right at the beginning of the Extended Cut, starting at 1:30 mins to about 6:00, where you repeatedly say you're going to do some more research about whether calculation results vs. just the calculation are saved in calculated table fields.  Back then, you were uncertain as to whether Microsoft had fixed enough problems with calculated fields post Access 2010.

I forgot all about that, Kent. My leaning is still NOT to use them. Any serious database that has future potential for moving up to SQL Server is going to have to lose them anyways. Honestly, this hasn't even come up in the past 2 years, so... I'm gonna stick with my original "evil" verdict. I can't think of a great reason WHY you should use them. I lump calculated table fields in with lookup fields in tables... Microsoft added these things in for NOVICE users to be able to more easily do things that are normally more complex and require some additional work/training.
