I use a template report I made that has horizontal lines and a rectangle placed with the visibility property set to false. One line at each fold point of the page and the invisible rectangle around the window of the envelopes I use.
Still have to do the trial and error method, but only the once. Also have to consistently use the same envelopes, or make a new template for each pack.

If it works, it works! I'm fortunate that i haven't worked with snail mail yet. I always try avoid things like printed reports and such. I know sometimes, its not possible and one day i'm going to eat my words but until then, I'm sticking with email!
