Linked Excel Spreadsheets

Does anyone here use a linked Excel spreadsheet for use in their Access Database and what is your opinion of it?

One big caveat is that the linked file, as viewed in Access, may have tons of blank rows (see picture below).  Excel lets you freely edit any cells anywhere.  Any cell that has been "touched on" -- edited, named, formatted, etc. -- in any way, even if it look empty, Access will treat it as part of a row with legitimate data.  The problem is that empty rows like that ruin normalization and could cause problems in your work in Access.  It is for this reason that I rarely link Excel files in Access.  When I do, it's temporary.  If I really need Excel data, I import the file instead of linking to it.

When I import the file and see empty rows, I can simply remove the rows without affecting the Excel file.  But if it is a linked file, you don't know if the empty rows contain useful info or not, because you can't see Excel formulae, named ranges, etc., in Access.  If you remove the rows, you directly affect the Excel file, because it is linked.  This is another downside of using linked files.

Great! Thank You. I am trying to put together a Weekly dataset and updating that table and show different views with different dates.
