Category sub totals

I have an access check register that i need to get the totals for the year of each sub description. The check book is broken into credit and debit with credit having sub categories of Dues, Utilities, Grounds, etc. I also tried using an unbound text box using a sum value however i couldn't figure out how to parse out each category for a total.

Ex. [Forms]![Chkreg]![Description-Dues]

Of course, this did not work however i think i am on the correct path...

Is this what you're wanting to accomplish?

To get the results above I used a couple of queries.
The first query was a aggregate query which summed up the values for each description.
The second query got the total to be used on the form.
I then built a subform based on the second query and added it to the footer of the main form.

My queries are illustrated below.

I forgot i needed to break the data results into yearly totals. I created another query with Year: DatePart("yyyy",[Chkdate]) and added that to my Totals Query and it worked like a charm. Thank you again, i learned a lot by your examples.

I ran into an issue configuring a running sum calculation. I have the query set to select a year of data however the running sum calculation is calculating all the years of data and not what have the query prompting for. Do i need to add a date component to the Running Sum calculation? See image
