You don't tend to have input controls on a Report
Instead you would make a choice in a Form and then show that choice on the Report.
You could use an IIF to show a tick symbol (✔).

Not sure to understand. The IIF would be the source control in the report to show the tick symbol?

If the checkboxes are for display purposes (for displaying the presence of a category in your records), then you can set the control source of the checkboxes to be a DCount() function that counts the number of records that have that category.  See my pictures below.  The recordsource of your report needs to be a saved query for this to work, because DCount() needs it.  If DCount() is greater than zero, then it is equivalent to a True condition, and the checkbox will be checked.  And vice versa.
