Couples and Salutations

I have various databases in which I run into this problem of two people in a household, not necessarily with the same last name. It's further complicated because one might be involved with us in one way (say donate to a certain fundraiser) while the other might be in another way (say wants our newsletter). Finally, both might be involved in another way, for example, volunteer to help with an activity. I actually have only one first name and one last name field in the table. I put these people in three times. Once, the husband info. Once the wife info. And once both (e.g. Jim and Sally in first name, Smith in last name). Then I connect the proper record with the proper activity. So Jim gets the donation letter, Sally gets the newsletter, and the label for the info about the volunteer activity has both of their names on it. Maybe not the best way, as you have to change the address up to 3 times if someone moves, but each activity or group prints mailing labels which are specific to the person involved, which my constituents seem to want.
