Messenger

Richard:
In our Company we developed an MS Access Application that is shared by 8 users on 8 different workstations. It uses a Split database (Not an SQL Server) that is in a Local Network.
Richard, you have developed apps that can recognize your computer from others (In Account Balances) and set the screen for you.
Is there an easy way to make an intranet Messenger where one user can send a message to another internally?  I developed a messenger Screen that updates using a timer event.  The Problem is that everyone can see everyones messages.
One of the users is the Phone Operator. Users need to send private messages to the Phone Operator. I dont allow Personal Phones in the office, so I need to develop this.
Another thing I need to do is to be able to send a Beep to the Operators Computer from Any station with an ID.   Pretty much like what ICQ used to be (ICQ was the Very first messenger)

I believe that developing an Intranet Messenger Access Program could be a very interesting Tech help series 1,2,3...

Oh this looks like it could be fun, if Richard isn't interested right now I might mess around with a template.

Great. I look forward to this.  Richard has a lot of this stuff done for his Account balances.  He identifies the computer before he loads the Positioning of the windows.  He also does some of this on the Access Updater v.1 Program. Some of these routines may serve to do the From and to Computer to Computer in the Network.   I hope he takes the Project. It can be a nice little app by itself or be added to an existing Database.

A simpler way is to use the same messenger I have and to FILTER OUT responses inside Access itself. Meaning that the Data source of the Form could be an SQL statement where User ID = the receiver ID.  But I would rather see a more elegant solution

Finally for this to work we need to be able to PING (Alert, Beep) the end user when a message comes in in close to real time

I would like to add a vote for this as well, and maybe add some pre programmed messages as "please close your session as we need to restart the system" and so on.

I've had something like this on my To Do list for a while now. I'll move it up the list.

Nice Kevin, I started playing with it as basically a live chat, coming along nicely.

Get the current user by login or Environ("UserName")
Then you can filter messages based on that when you store it in the MessageT.

Hey Guys. This is Great.
Kevin and Adam would you be willing to share you code?

This would be a great tool for our company. We have a database that we use to track and resolve field issues with buildings. It would be helpful if, in addition to the text messages if pictures and PDFs could also be transmitted. I'm already working on uploading pictures and PDFs for documenting the issues but it would be helpful to send those things to the engineers in near real time from the same program. Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Are you using SQL server A Glenn? Or are your engineers on the same network as the database? Sending links to items through the network wouldn't be too hard but sending items into access, storing it there, and then allowing it to somebody else to download sounds hard. Pictures you could do. My code isn't near done yet, so far I'm here:

We can access the company network remotely but........... (NOT optimum). I'm working with using MySQL as the back end on my website. The Access front end would be on each computer or laptop. Then all they need is an internet connection and they're in business. I'll have folders for the pictures and PDFs, upload/download. Just thought it would be nice to send pictures like in a text message.

If not on a LAN, I would use a mapped Google Drive to share files.

My Friends...
The Idea with this proposed messenger started as an intranet Application to text each other inside the same network.
Yes, we can have a lot of improvements, but I believe a first Version should be a simple small unintrusive Skin.
My initial idea was to have a small mini form that everyone has open but not as an open Chat. With Messages Filtered out.
The Form I published is actually an Open Live Chat. I Like Kevins App. But I wonder if the User console is too big.
Again, Richard I appreciate your going to vacations but if you have this in your list I will sign up for the Course, template, seminar.

Kevin.  How are you coming up with your messenger?   I would like to try it to see if it works for us.  Tell me if there is  cost.

Should I resurrect the old chat room here on the website? See what Denise is doing? LOL

Now that I think about it - this would make an awesome TechHelp video. Add Chat to your Access database. I know this thread is 2 years old... but I really like the idea.

I like the idea of a Chat Tech Help series.
