locked backend file

From my front-end, When I select a new backend file and relink the tables to the new back-end file, the original back-end file remains locked until I quit the front-end.

I can use the front-end to make changes in the new Back-end linked table records, but windows file explorer shows the initial back-end file has a locking file and I cannot delete or compaceandrepair the first back-end file. Do I have to somehow close the first bank-end file.  If so, what commands should I use?

Richard you shouldn't have to quit the front-end.  Just make sure that you don't have any forms open that would be accessing the back-end.  Including other users.

It might be that you got "out of sequence" somehow.  Completely close down Access and using File Explorer take a look and see if you see the file ending in .laccdb  If you and everyother user is out of the DB then you should be able to safely delete the .laccdb file.
Open the back end directly and do the compact and repair on just the back end. Then close it.
Do the compact and repair for the front end next.  You should now be able to re-link the tables.

If you are still having locking issues you probably have a form that is bound to a table open.

The front-end allows users to compact and repair the back-end database.  Basically, this works by
1.copying the back-end file to a TEMPFile.
2. The The Front-End is then inked to the tables in TEMP file.
3.  I attempt  to compactandRepair the original back-end file
4.
